The 1854 eagle is often assumed to be a common date with the same rarity level as issues such as the 1851, 1852, 1853 and 1855. This far from accurate and, in reality, the 1854 is very scarce in the higher circulated grades and legitimately rare in Uncirculated.
This golden-orange slider shows nearly full luster and has very clean surfaces. There are some clashmarks at the centers on either side but the overall quality of the surfaces is exceptional for an issue which is typically seen heavily abraded.
There have been just four PCGS AU58 examples of this date (none with CAC approval) sold at auction since May 2007. The prices they garnered have ranged from a low of $2,938 to a high of $3,355 with the most recent sale being, ex Heritage 4/14: 6590.
I have only handled one finer 1854 eagle, a PCGS MS61, in over two years.
