Small Date variety.
There are two distinct varieties of eagle struck at the Philadelphia mint and the Small Date is easily the scarcest of the two. This variety is generally seen in the EF40 to AU50 range and properly graded AU55′s are quite scarce.
This piece has lovely natural fiery orange-gold color which is strongest at the obverse border. As always, the stars are flat at their centers but the rest of the detail is stronger than average for the issue. The fields show light marks consistent with the grade and there is a mint-made spot below the 1 in the date.
The last APR for an NGC AU55 1850 Small Date eagle is Heritage 2/13: 24426 at $1,880.
As with many of the Philadelphia No Motto eagles of this era, this is a highly undervalued issue in higher grades.
This is the only example approved by CAC in this grade with none higher.
