Only 3,900 business strikes were made and, as with all gold coins produced during this year, the 1871 gold dollar is a rare issue in the higher Uncirculated grades.
This piece has fantastic eye appeal with mostly prooflike surfaces that also incorporate some mint frost in the fields. The devices are frosted and offer good contrast while the surfaces are very lightly marked with just a few tiny scuffs in the fields visible below strong magnification.
No PCGS MS64 1871 gold dollars have been sold at auction since Heritage 9/07: 3159 that brought $2,070. I have not personally handled a Gem 1871 in many years and I feel that this date is extremely undervalued in MS63 and above.
