CHOICE AU CIVIL WAR DATE 1865 DOUBLE EAGLE
This date was formerly very scarce until the discovery of hundreds of nice examples in the S.S. Republic treasure. Today, it is the second most available Philadelphia Civil War double eagle after the 1861. Many 1865 double eagles graded AU58 have been dipped or have unnatural surfaces, making choice pieces with natural color hard to locate.
This example is not from a shipwreck and it shows dirty natural golden-orange surfaces with darker contrast on the relief details. There is no real wear but there is just enough bag friction and luster breaks from transport to accurately grade this coin AU58.
None of the last PCGS AU58 1865 double eagles which have sold at auction–dating back close to five years–were CAC approved and they brought between $4,313 and $6,463.
An affordable and historically significant issue.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 56 finer.
