SCARCE, UNDERVALUED PCGS/CAC EF40 1870-S HALF EAGLE

Of the 17,000 half eagles dated 1870-S, fewer than 100 are known and most of these are in the EF40 to AU50 grade range. When an EF example is available, it tends to come bright and scuffy with no semblance of originality.

This is an absolutely textbook coin for the grade with deep, even color covering the obverse and the reverse. There is some minor weakness of strike on the eagle’s neck and a few small marks are present in the left obverse field.

The last CAC approved PCGS EF40 1870-S half eagle to sell at auction brought $3,173 as Heritage 4/13: 5812.

I can think of few better values at under $3,000 than this choice 1870-S half eagle.

CAC has approved 3 in this grade with 7 finer.
