Coin Description

NICE PCGS MS61 1852-C HALF EAGLE

Variety 1.

Due to the existence of a few small hoards, the 1852-C is the most available Charlotte half eagle in higher grades. Many of the new finds are wonderful MS63 and MS64 coins which are out of the price range for many collectors. MS61 and MS62′s, when available, seem like better value especially for the type collector.

This very frosty example shows pleasing natural reddish-orange color which at the obverse border. The surfaces show some abrasions consistent with the assigned grade but this piece is unabashedly “new” with no rub or wear seen on the cheek of Liberty or on the other high spots.

Only one PCGS MS61 1852-C half eagle has sold at auction since March 2006 and it realized $6,463 as Heritage 6/14: 4828.

With nice AU58 examples of this issue selling in the $4,000-5,000 range, the small premium I am asking for a decidedly finer coin seems sensible and reasonable.
