GEM AU58 1844-O HALF EAGLE

While dozens of 1844-O half eagles have been graded AU58 by PCGS and NGC, only a small number can be described as "choice and original."

This pristine example shows what appears to be totally natural green-gold hues on the obverse and the reverse. There is no real wear seen on the high spots and the surfaces are very choice for the issue save for a shallow old contact mark in front of Liberty's ear.

Only two PCGS AU58 1844-O half eagles have sold at auction since 2007. One of these was approved by CAC and it brought $2,530 as Heritage 6/11: 4630.

If I were collecting No Motto New Orleans half eagles, I'd rather have this lovely AU58 than a so-so MS61 at double the price.

CAC has approved 12 in this grade with another 12 finer.
