Coin Description

UNCIRCULATED 1806 HALF EAGLE

BD-6, R-2. Round or Knobbed 6, Obverse Stars arranged 7×6.

Housed in an old green label holder and seemingly undergraded by at least a point by today’s standards.

The 1806 Round 6 is the most common date in the popular Capped Bust Right half eagle series. The 1800-1807 date run is often available in the lower Uncirculated grades but not so often with the sort of quality which impresses me (or CAC) as much as on the present coin.

This choice for the grade example is well struck and satiny with surfaces which are very clean for the assigned grade and which appear to be unmolested. The strike is very sharp with near full definition at the centers while the surfaces show very few marks which are mostly limited to the lower obverse fields. The color is a pleasing rich yellow-gold and the overall appearance exceeds that seen on examples of this type in higher grade holders.

No PCGS MS60 1806 Round 6 half eagle has sold at auction since January 2000. A PCGS MS61 brought $15,275 as Stacks Bowers 2014 ANA: 13210.

This is a wonderful early half eagle which should greatly appeal to the type collector who is seeking a single great Capped Bust Right half eagle.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS60 with 56 higher.
