GEM SLIDER 1800 HALF EAGLE
BD-5, High R-3. Blunt 1 in date.
This lovely 1800 half eagle has been off the market for close to 40 years (see pedigree below) and it is a pleasing "slider" with no real wear.
The 1800 is a significant issue as the first half eagle produced during the 19th century. It is not rare in AU58 but most pieces which are so graded have been processed and lack character. This example appears to be totally natural with rich green-gold and medium orange toning covering lightly abraded, lustrous surfaces. The strike is sharp and there are no adjustment marks or rim issues, as is often the case on this type.
Heritage 2/16: 3372, graded AU58 by NGC and approved by CAC, sold for $14,100 and was, in my opinion, nowhere near as choice as this coin.
An exceptional Capped Bust Right half eagle and a nicer coin than most in MS60 and MS61 holders.
CAC has approved 19 in this grade with 27 finer.
Ex Stacks 2/79: 332, Ellis Robison collection.
