VERY RARE 1875 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 400 business strike quarter eagles were made, giving this the lowest emission of any Liberty Head issue of this denomination in business strike form. There are an estimated 50 or so known with most of these in the EF45 to AU55 grade range. The finest known is a PCGS MS64 which was last sold in the May 1999 Goldberg auction.

This piece is semi-prooflike but an obvious business strike as evidenced by the remaining luster within the surface texture. It is typically scuffy with the marks seemingly exaggerated by the degree of reflection. Some light yellow-gold color is present and the eye appeal is better than average for the date and grade.

The last auction trade for a PCGS AU55 was Heritage 6/14: 4768 which realized $14,100 and which showed a detracting mark on Liberty's chin.

Along with the similarly dated gold dollar, half eagle and eagle, this issue is notable for having one of the lowest mintages of any business strike 19th century U.S. gold coin.
