Coin Description

CONDITIONALLY RARE 1841-C QUARTER EAGLE

In higher grades, the 1841-C is the second rarest quarter eagle from this mint. It is essentially unavailable above AU55 to AU58 and most of the slabbed pieces which I have seen in this range were unoriginal and unappealing. Choice pieces with natural color are extremely scarce and very undervalued.

This dark green-gold example is one of the few 1841-C quarters eagles I have seen which was not scrubbed. It has a good amount of dirt within the lettering on the reverse and the surfaces lack the typically-seen marks. The radial lines on the first four and the final two stars are not fully brought up but the overall quality of strike is acceptable for the issue. The reverse shows minor die rotation to the right.

Only three AU55′s in total have sold at auction since 2010; the last of these was a non-CAC PCGS coin which realized $4,700 as Heritage 3/16: 4401.

Due to some really nasty looking NGC coins having sold cheaply at auction, levels for this date are lower than they should be. In my opinion, this is a $5,500-6,000 coin in this grade.

CAC has approved four in this grade with three finer.
