RARE PCGS AU58 1850-D GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 2-C.

The 1850-D is the second rarest Type One gold dollar from Dahlonega, trailing only the low mintage 1854-D. It is very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and I have long maintained that this date is the single most undervalued D mint gold dollar of any type.

This lustrous slider is well struck with sharper border detail than usual for the date. There are some light clashmarks at the centers but this appears to be an early die state and it is well made. Both sides show just a hint of rub and the color is a pleasing natural light green-gold. A small dig in the left obverse field is not detracting.

A good testament of this date's scarcity in AU58 is the fact that none has sold since August 2012 and the last PCGS AU58 was sold in February 2006 for $5,750.

An Uncirculated example of this date--if available--would be a five figure coin, making this nice AU58 an excellent value at around half the price.
