UNDERGRADED/UNDERVALUED 1863-S QUARTER EAGLE

As with the 1861-S and 1862-S, this is an undervalued and rare date with fewer than 100 known and mos of these in the VF-EF range.

This undergraded piece is housed in an old green label holder and in my opinion, it is a full EF45 by today's standards. Both sides show nice orange-gold color and a good deal of luster is seen on both sides. The strike is typical for the date and no doubt PCGS confused weakness on the wings with wear.

This exact coin is the only PCGS VF35 1863-S quarter eagle to appear at auction; see below for the full pedigree. An inferior PCGS EF45 sold for $3,290 as Heritage 3/13: 4127.

Ex Heritage 9/16: 4504 where it sold for $3,995.

CAC has approved 1 in this grade with 5 finer.
