PCGS/CAC MS64 1889 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 17,600 1889 quarter eagles were struck and this date is much scarcer in high grades than most of the quarter eagles from the 1890's and 1900's. MS64 is the best value grade for this issue as Gems, when available, bring in excess of $6,500.

This borderline Gem shows especially nice orange-gold, rose and green colors over very frosty surfaces. A few light scuffs on the obverse preclude an MS65 grade but this piece is nice enough that I felt it had a chance to grade MS64+.

A non-CAC PCGS MS64 1889 quarter eagle was sold twice by Heritage in 2016 and it realized $1,469 and $1,528.

This would make a nice type coin for the collector with a budget of around $2,000 who needs a Liberty Head quarter eagle but who doesn't want to buy a mundane common date.

CAC has approved nine in this grade with five finer.
