RARE GEM SLIDER 1848-C QUARTER EAGLE

Variety 2.

While available in lower grades, the 1848-C quarter eagle is quite rare in properly graded AU58 and it is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just three or four known. The present example is one of the two most “perfect” circulated 1848-C quarter eagles I’ve seen and it is an important coin for the specialist.

This uncommonly well detailed piece shows rich natural russet color which is indicative of a coin which is unmolested and unprocessed. There is considerable underlying mint frost on both sides and this piece has no real wear, just some minor friction from storage. The surfaces are very clean and the eye appeal is exceptional for both the date and the grade.

Three PCGS AU58′s have sold at auction since 2011 including this coin. A PCGS AU58+ with CAC approval realized a strong $9,200 as Heritage 2012 FUN: 6114 and I sold an NGC AU58+ with CAC approval for $7,750 in October 2012.

If you collect Charlotte quarter eagles by date or if you just want to own one marvelous example of this type, you should give this piece strong consideration.

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
