RARE CAC APPROVED PCGS AU58 1856-O QUARTER EAGLE

While not well-known outside of the specialist community, the 1856-O is among the rarest New Orleans quarter eagles in higher grades. The number of properly graded AU58's is far fewer than the population figures at PCGS and NGC suggest. In Uncirculated, the 1856-O is extremely rare with just four or five known to me and none finer than MS62.

This light yellow-gold example is well-detailed for this issue and it shows a good amount of frosty luster. There are some minor marks in the right obverse field and behind the neck of the eagle which are consistent with the grade and issue.

The only PCGS AU58 1856-O quarter eagle to sell at auction since 2005 brought $4,025 as Heritage 10/10: 4624 and it wasn't CAC approved.

With an Uncirculated example priced at well over $20,000-25,000 (if you can even find one!) this nice CAC approved AU58 represents the best available quality for the date.

CAC has approved five in this grade with just one finer (MS62).
