CONDITION CENSUS 1840 QUARTER EAGLE

Until the discovery of a small group in the late 1990's, this date was all but unknown in Uncirculated. Today, it is likely that around five or so exist in higher grades with the finest being a pair of PCGS MS64 coins. The 1840 quarter eagle is numismatically significant as the first Philadelphia issue of this new design and it is a very popular coin as a result.

The strike seen on this piece is well above average for the issue despite weakness on the stars at the left obverse and at the central reverse. The surfaces are choice with just a few light marks noted while the color is a pleasing medium orange-gold; a hint of coppery-gold can be seen near Liberty's nose.

No PCGS graded MS63 example of this date has ever sold at auction. A PCGS MS64 1840 quarter eagle with CAC approval sold for $31,625 as Stacks Bowers 11/11: 9222.

This is an important coin for the advanced collector of Liberty Head quarter eagles.

CAC has approved one in this grade with one finer (MS64). Only eight have been approved in total.
