GORGEOUS CONDITION CENSUS 1872 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 3,000 quarter eagles were struck for circulation by the Philadelphia mint in 1872 and there are fewer than 100 known. Of these, an estimated seven or eight grade Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. I am aware of three properly graded MS63's and a single PCGS MS64 which is off the market in a private collection.

This is the nicest example of this date I have seen or sold in many years. It is mostly Prooflike but with enough frost to clearly distinguish it as a business strike. The naked eye appearance is exceptional with contrast between the frosted devices and the watery fields; a few small, scattered ticks keep this from a higher grade.

The only APR for a PCGS MS63 was back on November 2000 when the Bass IV: 231 coin sold for $12,075.

If you are assembling a serious set of Liberty Head quarter eagles, this is the 1872 which you want to add to your collection!

CAC has approved three in this grade with none finer.
