RARE AND OVERLOOKED UNCIRCULATED 1870 QUARTER EAGLE

Only 4,520 1870 quarter eagles were struck and this date is a true Condition Rarity with probably not more than five or six known in Uncirculated. The finest known is a single MS65 from the Bass collection which sold for $19,550 all the way back in 1999; all the others are MS60 to MS61.

This slight prooflike example is truly a “new” coin despite the negative implications of the dreaded MS60 grade and it shows attractive even golden color with far fewer scuffs than one might expect for the date and grade.

The last PCGS MS60 to sell at auction brought $3,335 at a Scotsman auction in 2008 and an NGC MS61 sold for $3,525 as Heritage 2/15: 4181.

The 1870 is one of my favorite sleeper dates in the quarter eagle series and this is only the second Uncirculated piece that I have offered.

CAC has approved this one coin with one finer (MS61) for a total of just two in Uncirculated.
