ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN 1859 QUARTER EAGLES

Type One or Old Reverse; designated by PCGS.

1859 quarter eagles are known with two distinct reverse varieties. Both become scarce in the lower Uncirculated grades and are very rare in properly graded MS64. For the Old Reverse variety, there are three known in MS64 and just one finer: an NGC MS67 which realized $46,000 in a 2011 auction.

This is the single finest Type One reverse 1859 quarter eagle I have offered for sale. Both sides feature rich mint bloom below very attractive russet toning. The overall appearance is exceptional and this is clearly a coin which has never been "monkeyed" with.

A nice non-CAC MS64 example of this variety sold for $8,813 as Heritage 1/16: 6376.

This is clearly a Condition Census example of this important date.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
