RARE 1824 HALF EAGLE, NGC/CAC MS60

BD-1, High R-5.

The 1824 is an important melt rarity of this era with fewer than three dozen known from an original mintage of 17,340. The majority of the known 1824 half eagles are Uncirculated as this issue saw virtually circulation. There are as many as a half dozen known in the MS63 to MS64 range and the single finest is a PCGS MS65 which has never appeared at auction.

This coin has never been offered for sale since it appeared in a January 2004 auction (see below), and it is likely the only relatively affordable 1824 half eagle known as many of the survivors are valued at $100,000+ in today’s market. The color is a light green-gold and there is considerable luster present. As one would expect from the assigned grade there is friction on the high spots, but this piece almost certainly never saw circulation as evidenced by the lack of abrasions on the surfaces.

There are no good comparables for this example as there are none graded at PCGS between the MS60 to MS61 range, and NGC has only graded this one example in MS60 with another graded MS61.

This is an extremely important coin which represents among the very few chances the advanced collector will ever have to acquire a problem-free 1824 half eagle.

CAC has approved one in this grade with six finer.

Ex Heritage 2004 FUN: 2179 where it sold for $33,350 as a PCGS AU58.
