INCREDIBLE GEM PROOF 1836 PATTERN GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS PR66+DCAM/CAC
J-67, R-5. Original.
Featuring a design by Christian Gobrecht, Judd-67 is an extremely important issue as it is the very first Gold Dollar pattern struck in the United States; a denomination which wouldn’t be adopted until 1849. It is also notable as the first gold pattern and it is perhaps the most affordable pattern struck in this metal.
It is estimated that there are three dozen or so known with most in the PR63 to PR64 range. A few Gems exist but I have never seen one which was comparable to the present example. This is a simply remarkable coin with a level of workmanship one doesn’t expect to see on a gold coin from the 1830s. It has a full black and white appearance with the heavily frosted devices strongly contrasted by the deep mirror fields. With the exception of a tiny squiggly lintmark over the top left of the 1 in the value, the surfaces approach perfection and this coin could very easily have graded PR67. It is easily the finest J-67 I have ever seen.
The record price at auction for this issue is $37,600 set by Legend 10/2017: 412 which was graded PR66 CAM by PCGS and which was approved by CAC. A PCGS/CAC PR66 recently brought $31,200 as Heritage 2019 ANA: 4004.
If you have ever wanted to own a Gem gold pattern but you can’t afford the mid-to-high six figure price tag on most issues, you’ll no doubt have a strong interest in this remarkable 1836 gold dollar.
This is the only DCAM example of this issue approved by CAC in any grade. CAC has approved two PR66s with no designation and two with a Cameo designation.
