WELL-DEFINED PCGS/CAC VF35 1851-C $5.00

If you handed this coin to me raw and asked me to grade it, I would say “Nice EF40, or a bit better.” I’m not sure what PCGS was basing their grade on, but this coin has a typical weak strike at the obverse border, which was likely confused with wear.

The prices for the limited number of choice VF Charlotte half eagles in the SB Fairmont sales were strong across the board, with even non-CAC coins selling at or over PCGS Price Guide values.

I like the thought of this coin in a seven-Mint set of Liberty Head half eagles!                                                          

CAC has approved 2 in this grade with 23 finer.
