CONDITIONALLY SCARCE PCGS AU58 1874-CC

This is the third most available Type Two CC double eagle in terms of overall rarity but in higher grades, the 1874-CC is many times more scarce than the 1875-CC and the 1876-CC. Properly graded AU58 examples of this date are not often available, and the 1874-CC is rare and expensive in any Uncirculated grade.

This piece is not from a recent hoard and it lacks the dark smudges and deep green-gold color which those 1874-CCs display. Both sides show pleasing natural medium orange-gold hues with a few areas of coppery tone at the shield on the reverse. As is typical with this issue, the surfaces are a touch “marky” with some abrasions seen in the fields and Liberty’s cheek.

There were four PCGS AU58s sold in 2018 (with prices ranging from a low of $10,200 to a high of $14,400), but only one APR exists from 2019 and this was Heritage 2/2019: 3911 at $10,200.

If you can find one, an MS61 1874-CC will cost you at least four times the price of this nice slider. If I were a collector of CC 20s, I’d save my big purchases for fundamentally scarce issues.
