CAC APPROVED 1854-O THREE DOLLAR IN EF40
The 1854-O is numismatically significant as the only issue of this denomination produced at the New Orleans mint. Extremely Fine examples are plentiful but most seen in 40 and 45 holders are not choice and have clearly been processed.
Housed in an older NGC holder, this lustrous example shows a good amount of natural caramel-gold color which is deepest at the borders. It would likely grade EF45 were it not for some mint-made planchet imperfections on the obverse and the central reverse; these are not uncommon for this issue.
The last straight-graded EF40 1854-O Three Dollar to sell at auction brought $2,585 as Heritage 9/14: 4399; it was not approved by CAC.
This represents excellent quality for the grade and it is a nice, affordable example of an important one-year issue.
CAC has approved six in this grade with 48 finer.
