Over 2 million 1926-S double eagles were struck but under 2,000 are known today, and most of these are coins which were sent to Europe for foreign trade payments; the coins which stayed in America were almost all melted after the 1933 Gold Recall.
Today, the 1926-S is the most available of the late date mintmarked Saints, but it is scarce in MS64 and rare in MS65.
This borderline Gem is sharply detailed and shows lovely rich rose and green-gold color. A few obverse cuffs near the arm holding the branch narrowly preclude a higher grade but this is an exceptional and totally original example.
A number of PCGS MS64+ 1926-S double eagles with CAC approval have sold at auction since 2012 with the typical piece bringing in the $9,000-11,000 range. If available, a PCGS MS65 with CAC approval could bring in excess of $30,000.
A lovely coin and a smart purchase for the collector who can’t quite swing a Gem.
CAC has approved 32 in MS64 (I am not aware of how many of these grade MS64+) with 9 finer.
