SCARCE UNCIRCULATED 1905 DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1905 is the scarcest 20th century Liberty Head double eagle. It is not often seen in grades higher than MS61 to MS62 and it becomes both rare and spendy in MS63 and higher.
This is a choice, natural example with pleasing medium green-gold and orange hues accentuated by dirt on the relief details. There are marks consistent with the grade on both sides but none are deep or detracting.
The last PCGS MS61 1905 double eagle to sell at auction realized $3,055 as Heritage 10/14: 4486.
Prices for this date jump considerably on the next grades up and for most collectors, anything above an MS61 is an overspend.
