FS-301. Repunched Date variety. There are very few significant die varieties known in the Type Three series but the 1896 Repunched Date is clearly visible to the naked eye. I always check examples of this date for the variety and I see very few which leads me to believe that this is a scarce issue. The coin itself is spectacular with the naked-eye look of a Gem; the color is rich and glowing while the luster is thick and frosty. If you are the type of collector who likes to roll the dice, it might be worth contemplating what kind of premium could a coin like this generate in the future if die variety collecting in U.S. gold becomes more popular…
