The 1893-CC is the final double eagle struck at the Carson City mint. It is among the most available both in terms of overall and high grade rarity but, like all large-sized gold issues from this mint, it is very rare in properly graded MS63 and virtually unavailable finer. The PCGS/NGC population figures for this date in MS63 seem quite swollen by resubmissions and this makes sense as a high end coin, if it were to upgrade, would represent a huge “hit” for the owner. I have never personally seen an 1893-CC double eagle that was finer than the present coin and it has remarkably clean surfaces that show just a few small ticks that are consistent with the assigned grade. As of October 2012, CAC has approved just five different Carson City double eagles in MS63 (with none finer) including an 1882-CC, an 1884-CC, an 1892-CC and two examples of the 1893-CC. As far as I know, the only one of these that is for sale besides this 1893-CC is the 1882-CC (at close to $90,000!) and at less than half the price of that 1882-CC, this coin seems like great value to me. In fact, I like it considerably more than the NGC MS63 non-CAC example that brought $34,500 in the Battle Born auction. If you are looking for one really great CC double eagle for your type set or if you are a date collector who wants a monster 1893-CC for your set, this is the coin!
