The 1893-CC is numismatically significant as the final double eagle from this mint. It is an issue which saw less circulation than nearly any other CC coin of this denomination and as a result, it is seen most often in AU55 to MS62 grades. Locating nice Mint State examples with natural color and surfaces is very hard as most 1893-CC double eagles have been dipped or processed.

This frosty example is characterized by splendid rich coppery orange color as is found on the few remaining undipped 1893-CC double eagles. The surfaces are lightly abraded and lack the spots seen on some 1893-CC double eagles. Were it not for a thin scratch in the left obverse field from the outside of star two to the throat, this coin would almost certainly grade MS62.

The last MS61 example to sell at auction was ex Heritage 4/14: 5844. Graded by NGC and non-CAC approved, it brought $14,688. No others had sold at auction since August 2012.

This coin is nicer than the non-CAC NGC MS62 that I wholesaled for $26,500 at the recent Long Beach show and it represents unusual quality for the date and grade.

CAC has approved nine in the grade with 12 finer.
