Old Green Holder. By today’s standards I grade this coin a solid MS62.
The 1890 is reasonably available in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it becomes hard to find in MS62 and it is very scarce in MS63 and above. Most of the MS61′s that I see have been dipped and are heavily abraded.
This fresh, original coin shows rich yellow-gold color with splashes of rose at the centers. It is very clean for the grade with just a few small scuffs on the lower jaw line and in the obverse fields; the revers is clean and choice.
The last three APR’s for PCGS MS62 1890 double eagles are $2,820, $3,220 and $3,220 respectively; none of these had CAC approval.
This date is not often seen with this degree of “freshness.”
CAC has approved five in this grade with 16 finer.
