As a rule, Carson City double eagles (with the exception of the early dates from the 1870′s) are seldom found in grades below EF40. They rarely saw this degree of circulation, particularly the dates from the 1880′s and the 1890′s.
This well-worn example saw considerable circulation yet it survived its Wild West sojourn with character and even wear. The upper obverse and much of the reverse show splashes of deep caramel-gold color which gives it warmth and eye appeal.
The last VF30 example of this date to sell at auction was an unappealing NGC coin which brought $2,300 as Lot 4205 in Heritage’s 2014 ANA auction. No PCGS VF30 has sold at auction since March, 2011.
At this price point, it would be nearly impossible to find a more appealing CC double eagle than this.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 171 finer.
