This lustrous “gem slider” shows crisply detailed surfaces and, with the exception of some minor friction on the obverse, it has an appearance that is comparable to many CC double eagles that I have seen in MS61 holders. What makes this coin great value is that an MS61 1890-CC will cost you $9,000-11,000. If I had to select one date to include in a type set of CC double eagles, it might well be the 1890-CC as it tends to be very well made and it often shows superior quality luster. What this date also often shows is heavy marks which this piece does not have. I recently wholesaled a non-CAC AU58 example of this issue for $4,850 and it has about a quarter of the eye appeal that this exceptional 1890-CC shows!
