CHOICE SLIDER 1890-CC DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1890-CC is the most available Type Three double eagle from the Carson City mint which makes it an ideal choice for the type collector. It is available from time to time in AU58 but pieces so graded are not choice due to baggy surfaces and a lack of natural color.
This choice “slider” shows only the slightest wear with considerable natural mint luster below nice medium orange-gold color. The surfaces lack the typical deep, dense abrasions save for two small, shallow marks on Liberty’s neck.
The last NGC/CAC AU58 1890-CC double eagle to sell at auction was Heritage 2/16: 3443 which sold for $7,638; a cheap price for the grade due to some detracting stains. A nicer NGC AU58 with CAC approval realized $8,225 as Heritage 1/16: 6700.
An average quality MS61 example of this date, if available, would cost in excess of $15,000 which seems like a lot of money to pay for such a common date.
