The 1889 is one of the more overlooked Type Three double eagles despite a low mintage of 44,000 business strikes. This date is available in the higher circulated grades and is not especially scarce in MS60 to MS61. It is hard to locate in properly graded MS62 and very rare in MS63 and above.
This choice, original example is notable for showing fewer marks than usual for the date and grade. It has pronounced rich yellow-gold color with a splash of rose and green-gold at the central obverse; the color is more even and a bit less intense on the reverse. There are a few scuffs in the obverse fields and the luster is soft and very frosty. The eye appeal is well above average.
The last two 1889 double eagles in MS62 to trade at auction were both PCGS coins and neither was approved by CAC. One sold for $4,113 as Heritage 7/13: 3739 while the other realized $4,700 as Heritage 4/13: 6044.
In MS63, a nice CAC approved example of this date is worth at least $15,000 which makes this choice MS62 an excellent value, in my opinion.
CAC has approved 11 in MS62 with just one finer (MS63).
