GEM SLIDER 1889-CC DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1889-CC is one of the more available Carson City double eagles but it is much harder to find than the really common issues such as the 1876-CC, 1884-CC and 1890-CC. It is scarce in properly graded AU58 and rare in Uncirculated with almost none available higher than the MS61 to MS62 range.
This fresh-to-the-market example is truly the epitome of a “gem slider” with the naked=eye appearance of an MS62 coin. It is extremely clean and very original with lovely surfaces, delicate natural orange-gold color and just a touch of rub on the cheek of Liberty. Unlike most 1889-CC double eagles, the surfaces are not riddled with abrasions and this piece appears to have not been shipped loose in a bag as were so many double eagles from this era.
The most recent APR for an 1889-CC double eagle in PCGS/CAC AU58 is Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 1372 which realized $9,988 and which was clearly not as nice as the present example.
An MS61 example of this date (in PCGS with CAC approval) would bring $16,000-18,000 if available and would not likely be more cosmetically appealing than this gem slider.
CAC has approved 16 in this grade with nine finer.
