Only 30,945 1889-CC double eagles were struck and this is amore difficult date to locate than such issues as the 1883-CC, 1884-CC and 1890-CC. Properly graded AU58′s are scarce.
This “gem slider” has the naked-eye appearance of an MS61 but it is accurately graded given its slight friction in the fields. This coin probably saw no circulation but, rather, it was rubbed by other coins when it was shipped loose in a bag. There are minimal marks and nice satiny luster.
The last two APR’s for PCGS AU58 1889-CC double eagles are $7,638 in September 2012 and $7,475 in February 2012.
This is very good value as an MS61 example of this date, if available, would likely cost in the $13,000-14,000 range and would probably not have comparable eye appeal.
