The 1885-CC is the rarest CC double eagle from the 1880′s and it is one of the two rarest “late date” issues along with the 1891-CC. Only 9,450 were made and most of the 200-300 which survive are in the EF45 to AU53 range. This is a very scarce issue in properly graded AU58 and it is rare in Uncirculated.
This lustrous example is struck in medium orange-gold and it shows light wear which is mostly confined to the obverse fields and the high spots. It is lightly abraded on the obverse; the reverse has a few deeper scuffs including a curving horizontal scrape through the shield. The eye appeal is excellent for the date and grade.
The last auction record for an AU58 example of this date is Heritage 10/12: 6262, which brought $21,150.
This date has shown excellent price performance in the last few years and as CC double eagles continue to increase in value (due to unprecedented demand) it is likely that key issues such as the 1885-CC will continue their advance upwards.
