RARE UNCIRCULATED 1884-CC DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1884-CC is among the more available dates in the Carson City double eagles series. It becomes hard to locate in the lower Uncirculated grades and it is rare in MS62 and above. Most of the coins I see in MS61 holders have either been stripped or they display extensive abrasions.
This very choice example has never been dipped or enhanced as exhibited by its rich luster and pleasing rich orange-gold color. The obverse is choice save for a luster graze in the right field; the reverse shows a natural diagonal grease stain at its upper portion which I don’t find detracting.
There have been nine APR’s for MS61 1884-CC double eagles in 2014/2015 with prices ranging from a low of $11,750 (for a poor quality example) to a high of $16,450 (for a nice example with CAC approval). This exact coin, in an NGC holder, sold for $14,100 as Heritage 4/15: 5450.
Here is the perfect type coin for the collector who wants a single, high quality Type Three double eagle from the fabled Carson City mint.
