The 1884-CC is among the more available Type Three double eagles from the Carson City mint. It is available in the higher AU grades but it is not often found with natural color and choice surfaces. Such coins are many times more scarce than the typical bright, processed example.
This totally fresh 1884-CC shows medium even orange-gold color with darkening on the highlights. It is lightly worn with considerable remaining luster and choice surfaces. If I had to estimate, I would say that fewer than 10% of the remaining examples in AU55 holders have this degree of eye appeal.
A PCGS/CAC AU55 last sold at auction as Heritage 2/15: 3269 and it realized $5,640. Another, also graded AU55 by PCGS and approved by CAC, realized $5,914 as Heritage 4/14: 6931.
An Uncirculated 1884-CC double eagle will cost in the $12,500-17,500 range (or more) and, in my opinion, this isn’t a date that merits such a large expenditure.
CAC has approved 33 in this grade with 61 higher.
