The 1884-CC is one of the more common double eagles from this mint. It is one of the few dates which can be found in Uncirculated with some degree of regularity but nice examples are becoming harder to find an are becoming too expensive for many collectors. This has, in turn, placed demand on nice AU55 and AU58 coins.

This gem “slider” has the naked-eye appearance of an MS62. It is well struck and frosty with nice even medium yellow-gold color and the surfaces are very clean with just a few small abrasions showing in the fields. A small amount of friction can be seen on the cheek of Liberty; the reverse is fully Uncirculated and grades at least MS61 to MS62 on its own.

In Heritage’s 3/13 sale, a CAC approved NGC AU58 1884-CC double eagle sold for $4,994. While original and properly graded, that coin had color which might not appeal to many buyers.

To my eyes, the present example is as nice as some 1884-CC double eagles I have seen bring over $10,000 at auction and it is a wonderful coin for the collector who wants one single great-looking coin from this mint for a type set.

CAC has approved 24 in this grade with 15 finer.
