CHOICE AU CAC APPROVED 1884-CC DOUBLE EAGLE
The 1884-CC is among the more available Type Three Carson City double eagles which makes it a logical choice for the type collector. It is available in AU55 to AU58 grades but the majority of the coins so graded by the services are inferior with heavy abrasions and a decided lack of originality.
This is a very pleasing example for the grade and were it not for a single mark on Liberty’s cheek, it might well have graded AU58. It is very lustrous with natural medium orange-gold hues and good detail on both sides. The reverse is a full 58 if not better and it shows some dirt in the recesses.
The last CAC approved AU55 1884-CC double eagle to sell at auction was a PCGS coin which realized $7,050 as Heritage 3/16: 5115. Non-CAC NGC AU55′s regularly sell in the $5,000-5,250 and a CAC approved piece sold cheaply for $5,288 as Heritage 3/14: 4289.
An affordable but decidedly above-average CC double eagle.
CAC has approved 36 in this grade with 70 finer.
