While not as rare in MS63 and above as the 1877-S through 1882-S double eagles, the 1883-S is a date which is not often found above MS62. Trends jumps to $9,750 in the next grade (MS63) making a nice, high end MS62 a very good value, in my opinion.
I bought this coin from a very talented “upgrader” and while this coin didn’t work for him, I can see why he tried it over and over. It is extremely high end with nice color and luster. A few small marks in the left obverse field narrowly preclude a higher grade.
Low end to average quality MS62 1883-S double eagles are worth $2,150 to $2,350. This piece is a bit more expensive but its quality makes it a good deal for the savvy Type Three collector.
CAC has approved 12 in this grade with just three finer.
