CHOICE AU 1883-CC DOUBLE EAGLE
This is among the more available Type Three Carson City double eagles which makes it a great choice for type purposes. It is only marginally scarce in AU55 but most of the coins in AU55 holders are baggy and have been processed.
This lightly marked, lustrous example shows nice medium orange gold color on both the obverse and the reverse. It has minimal wear and very good eye appeal due to its pleasing, natural appearance. I have seen inferior pieces graded AU58.
Only two PCGS AU55 examples have been auctioned since 2011 and neither were approved by CAC. Stacks Bowers 3/15: 465 realized $6,756 while Heritage 2/14: 4288 brought $6,463.
This is an especially good choice for the collector who wants a single choice CC double eagle for a type set.
CAC has approved 26 in this grade with 34 finer.
