Saddle Ridge Hoard pedigree.

The 1882-S double eagle has a similar rarity profile to the 1880-S and 1881-S. It is typically seen in AU55 to MS61 grades and it is scarce in properly graded MS62. MS63′s are rare and this date remains extremely rare in MS64 while Gems are non-existent.

This amazing example is the second finest 1882-S double eagle to come from the Saddle Ridge Hoard (exceeded by a single MS64+). Unlike nearly every known piece, this is nearly free of marks and I could have easily seen PCGS grading it a full MS64. There is a small mint-made copper spot on the obverse which serves as quick identification; a few tiny scuffs in the obverse fields are hard to see without magnification.

The finest 1882-S double eagles to ever sell at auction were a small number of MS63′s including one which brought $23,000 all the way back in July 2006.

If you are a serious collector of Type Three double eagles, you should realize that once this coin is sold, it is unlikely that a comparable 1882-S will ever become available. The original sales price of this exact coin was $27,500 and I am marking it up exactly 15% over my cost.

CAC has approved this one example in MS63+ with none finer.

This coin is accompanied by the original wood case of issue, a Certificate of Authenticity and a full color booklet about the hoard.
