CHOICE AU 1882-CC DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
The 1882-CC is the second scarcest Carson City double eagle from the 1880′s after the low mintage 1885-CC. It becomes scarce in the higher AU grades and it is rare (and expensive) in Uncirculated. Most seen in AU55 and AU58 holders are not choice with bright, scuffy surfaces.
This medium orange-gold example is pleasing for the grade with a considerable amount of luster seen below much cleaner surfaces than usual. In fact, I have seen many less lustrous 1882-CC double eagles in AU58 holders, with significantly more marks as well.
Only three PCGS AU55 1882-CC double eagles have sold at auction since early 2013 and the only CAC approved piece (which was not nearly as nice as the present example) just sold for $7,050 as Heritage 3/16: 5113.
This is a perfect 1882-CC double eagle for most collectors as a nice AU58 will cost around $10,000 and a fully Uncirculated piece, if available, will cost upwards of $20,000.
CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 21 finer.
