No double eagles were made at the Carson City mint in 1880 or 1881 and production resumed to the tune of 39,140 coins in 1882. The 1882-CC is a scarcer date than many collectors realize and it is not easy to locate in the higher AU grades, especially with choice surfaces.
This is a very clean example for the date and grade with a lack of serious marks. Both the obverse and reverse show warm golden-orange color and the amount of wear seen on both sides is less than one might expect.
Surprisingly, only one AU55 example of this date sold at auction in 2012. Graded by PCGS and offered as Heritage 10/12: 6251, it brought $4,700. It was not approved by CAC. The last NGC AU55 to sell at auction was Heritage 9/11: 4504 which sold for $3,973 and was not approved by CAC.
This is a nice example of date that is not often seen for sale.
CAC has approved nine in this grade with 11 finer.
