All of the 1877 through 1882 San Francisco double eagles are condition rarities. These dates are easy to find in the higher AU grades and only moderately scarce in MS60 but they become very hard to find in MS62 and all are rare in MS63 and higher.
This fresh, frosty example is just a few obverse scuffs shy of grading MS62 and being worth $5,000-6,000. It is original with pleasing rich orange-gold and rose color.
The last PCGS 61 to sell at auction brought $2,409 as Stacks Bowers 7/13: 5367.
