The rarity of the 1880 double eagle is rightfully overshadowed by the 1881 through 1887 Philadelphia issues but it is a tough issue which becomes quite scarce in Uncirculated. Choice AU examples are available but are seldom seen with natural color and choice surfaces.
This choice, original example has a “Euro” appearance with deep russet hues brightened by underlying luster and contrasted by deeper hues on the relief details. The wear is minimal and the most obvious marks are limited to the left obverse field.
Only one PCGS AU55 has sold at auction since January 2011 and it brought $2,585 as Heritage 3/15: 4252. No CAC approved AU55′s have crossed the block.
This date remains one of the best values in the Type Three series and this is among the more pleasing AU 1880 double eagles that I have seen.
CAC has approved six in this grade with seven finer.
