The 1877-CC begins a three year run of tough Type Three issues from the Carson City mint. It is not as scarce a date as the lower mintage 1878-CC and 1879-CC but it is a difficult issue to find, especially in higher grades. In properly graded AU58, the 1877-CC is very scarce and it is rare in Uncirculated with nearly every known example in this range falling into the MS60 to MS61 category.
This is a Gem Slider which ranks as one of the two or three nicest AU58 1877-CC double eagles which I have seen. From a visual standpoint, it looks like an MS62 (as a nice slider should…) and there is just the slightest amount of rub noted on the high spots of the obverse. Both sides are very clean and frosty with attractive natural yellow-gold color and this piece appears to be original in every respect. A small clashmark, from the reverse, can be seen at the lobe of Liberty’s ear and this is diagnostic to the issue.
The last two AU58 examples of this date to sell were a pair of NGC’s, without CAC approval, which brought $14,750 and $15,275 at the end of 2012. No PCGS AU58 1877-CC double eagle has been auctioned since the beginning of 2012.
If available, a Mint State example of this date would bring over $30,000 and would likely not be as appealing as this lovely AU58. A great coin for the savvy CC double eagle collector.
CAC has approved eight with four finer.
